Master Keying

Master Keying and Restricted Keys

Master Keying

Master Keying is the engineering of the lock chambers so that groups of locks can operate by more than 1 key.

A typical design is:
A Master Key which operates all doors.
A Sub-Master Key which operates all doors or a particular building
A group of Servant keys which operates individual doors within that Building and finally An Entrance Door which is operated by all the keys for that building.

The benefits are:

a) Everyone carries only one key which accesses the areas to which that person is entitled
b) If a key is lost then rekeying the locks which that key operated ay not affect all the other keys which are in use.
c) Good master key designs will assist with key control and management of building access.

Restricted Keying

This means that additional keys will only be provided when written instruction to do so is presented. This instruction must contain an authorized signature to enable the production of the keys require. So you can control absolutely all keys to your system.
